Road to Atlanta

The SEC title race: who is in, who is close, and who needs a miracle, cher.

  • 16 teams, no divisions
  • Top two meet in Atlanta
  • Standings re-checked against ESPN

Last updated Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, 11:11 AM CT. Standings as of Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, 2:03 PM CT. Records are through Week 7, after Saturday’s games on Oct. 17; no SEC team has played since, and Week 8 kicks off Saturday, Oct. 24. Standings re-checked Oct. 23 against ESPN (CONFIRMED, unchanged). Picks below are the official Gridiron Gumbo Week 8 picks from our Gumbo Pick Tracker. Standings can change when the games do, and so can my mind, cher.

How the Road to Atlanta works

The SEC has no divisions, 16 teams, and a simple rule: the top two teams in the conference standings by winning percentage meet in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Each team plays nine league games, so one loss matters about as much as a wrong turn on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge: you can still make it, but you will not enjoy it. If teams tie in the standings, the league’s tiebreaker rules decide who gets the ticket, and I am not going to guess at those before Thanksgiving.

Ties share a rank. The order inside a tie group is alphabetical here, not a tiebreaker. Teams have played different numbers of league games, so winning percentage, not wins, is what counts.

Who is on the road

  • Georgia and Kentucky (4-1 SEC): Tied at the top at .800. Georgia’s perfect league mark ended Saturday with a 27-24 loss to Auburn at home, though the Bulldogs still hold their 20-17 win over Alabama from Oct. 10. Kentucky went to Oklahoma and won 21-13, and has won five straight. Both have four league games left, and nine is a long road, so nobody has checked all the potholes yet.
  • Tennessee and Ole Miss (3-1): Right behind at .750. Tennessee beat Alabama 26-10 on the Third Saturday in October, and Ole Miss beat Missouri 31-3.
  • Alabama and Florida (3-2): Alabama took its second league loss in Knoxville, and Florida went to Texas and won 27-24. Both sit at .600, still in the conversation for that second spot.
  • Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State and Missouri (2-2): A four-team pile at .500. Auburn got the big win in Athens, LSU beat Mississippi State 31-0, and Missouri took a tough one at Ole Miss. This group is still very much in the stew.
  • Oklahoma and Texas (1-2): Both have six league games left, so there is plenty of cooking to do, but they would like some results to fall their way.
  • Arkansas, South Carolina and Texas A&M (1-3): Arkansas got its first league win, 31-21 at Vanderbilt. South Carolina had a bye, and Texas A&M’s 41-0 win over The Citadel was a non-conference game, so its league record did not move. It is going to take some help and some wins in a row, but nobody is cooked yet.
  • Vanderbilt (0-4): The only team still looking for a first league win. Their best possible finish is 5-4 in the conference, so the road to Atlanta is very narrow, and the road to a bowl is the real fight.

Week 8: the games that move the race

Our pick: Oklahoma 25, Mississippi State 22 (moved from 23-20 on Saturday, Oct. 24).
  • Tennessee (6-1, 3-1 SEC) at South Carolina (3-3, 1-3 SEC), 2:30 p.m. CT (ESPN). South Carolina is a 2.5-point favorite, total 50.5 (DraftKings, as of 8:12 p.m. CT Thursday, Oct. 22). Our pick: South Carolina 26, Tennessee 25 (was Tennessee 28-25 until Saturday, Oct. 24).
  • Texas A&M (4-3, 1-3 SEC) at Alabama (5-2, 3-2 SEC), 2:30 p.m. CT (ABC). Alabama is a 13.5-point favorite, total 49.5 (DraftKings, as of 11:11 a.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026; it was 50.5 as of 8:12 p.m. CT Thursday, Oct. 22). Our pick: Alabama 32, Texas A&M 19.

Our pick: Texas 29, Ole Miss 25.
  • Vanderbilt (3-4, 0-4 SEC) at Kentucky (6-1, 4-1 SEC), 6:30 p.m. CT (SEC Network). Kentucky is a 10.5-point favorite, total 52.5 (DraftKings, as of 8:12 p.m. CT Thursday, Oct. 22). Our pick: Kentucky 31, Vanderbilt 21.

Updated Sat., Oct. 24, 5:58 a.m. CT: the Oklahoma at Mississippi State and Ole Miss at Texas lines, and Oklahoma’s projected score, now match Gumbo’s Picks: SEC Week 8. Tennessee at South Carolina now has our pick as South Carolina 26-25 (updated Sat., Oct. 24, 6:16 a.m. CT).

If every pick above hits, Kentucky moves to 5-1 in the SEC and has first place to itself while idle Georgia sits at 4-1, Tennessee falls to 3-2, South Carolina falls to 2-3 in the SEC, Alabama goes to 4-2, and Texas and LSU each pick up a league win. Picks are opinions, not guarantees, and my Mawmaw keeps the receipts.

The one-liners

  • Georgia and Kentucky are tied at 4-1, and the last clean pot in the SEC got a spoon in it from Auburn on Saturday.
  • Tennessee and Ole Miss are right behind at 3-1, and both stirred the pot good on Saturday.
  • Alabama and Florida are at 3-2, with plenty of league games left on the stove.
  • The 2-2 pile is so crowded it looks like a crawfish boil at a family reunion, and everybody wants the last potato.
  • Oklahoma and Texas are 1-2 with six league games left to cook, so nobody should pull a chair up to that table just yet.
  • Arkansas has its first league win, and Vanderbilt is the lone team at 0-4 with five league games left to work with.
  • I have more cowbells than any grown man should, and none of them ring for anybody’s playoff odds. Only the standings count, cher.
