The news, straight up

CONFIRMED: Ole Miss quarterback Anthony “AJ” Maddox was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 20, on a charge of simple domestic violence, according to Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office records cited by the Clarion Ledger, SuperTalk Mississippi and On3. Per On3, he was booked at 6:41 a.m. local time.

CONFIRMED: The booking information says Maddox is accused of attempting “by physical menace to put a domestic victim in fear of imminent serious bodily harm,” per On3 and the Clarion Ledger. No other details had been released at press time.

Not yet official: As of 3:15 PM CT Tuesday, we had not found a statement from Ole Miss or from Maddox or his representatives about the arrest or his status with the team. A charge is an accusation, not a conviction, and Maddox is presumed innocent.

Update (Oct. 22, 2026): As of Oct. 22, Ole Miss has not issued a statement. We checked olemisssports.com, Ole Miss athletics’ X accounts and news coverage; the Daily Journal reported Ole Miss did not immediately respond to its request for comment.

Where he fits on the roster

REPORTED: Maddox is fourth on Ole Miss’s quarterback depth chart this season (fourth-string, not his jersey number; he wears No. 14), behind starter Trinidad Chambliss, Deuce Knight and Walker Howard, according to On3. He has not appeared in a game this season; in 2025 he got into two games, and his lone completion was a 19-yard pass against The Citadel, per the Clarion Ledger. The Rebels’ starting lineup is not expected to change because of this.

Maddox signed with Ole Miss in the 2024 class as a four-star prospect out of Oak Grove High in Hattiesburg, Miss., ranked the No. 13 player in the state and No. 26 quarterback nationally by the Rivals Industry Ranking, per On3.

We’ll update this story when Ole Miss comments or the case moves forward.
