Brief History
- Alfred M. Barbe High School opened Sept. 1, 1971; construction went on through the first semester and its first graduating class (260 seniors) walked in May 1973.[2]
- The campus was modeled after a junior college, with twelve buildings built around the open-classroom concept and the library at its center.[2]
- Barbe baseball has won a dozen state titles, from 1998 through 2023, and reached the 2012 state football final against Rummel.[2]
Location
Buccaneers Stadium
2200 W. McNeese St., Lake Charles, LA 70605[3]
Fun Facts
- Lake Charles Mardi Gras dates to 1882, and the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu claims the largest collection of Mardi Gras memorabilia in the South.[4]
- The city's Louisiana Pirate Festival (formerly Contraband Days) plays off the legend of Jean Lafitte and Contraband Bayou.[4]
- Barbe is pronounced "BARB," and its motto spells BUCS: Believe. Uphold. Care. Strive.[2]
Famous Alumni
T-Rohn’s Comedian Corner
Lake Charles has a pirate festival every year, so a team called the Buccaneers isn't a mascot. It's just civic pride with a sword.
Barbe is pronounced 'Barb.' Lake Charles folks will correct you faster than a Mardi Gras float throws beads.
Barbe was built like a junior college. Even the parking lot looks like it has a minor in business.
