The setup

Arguably the top SETX game: two of the area’s best offenses at 1-1 in district.

T-Rohn says: Hamshire-Fannett at Silsbee, two of the area’s best offenses. Scoreboard operators in both towns have been doing finger stretches all week.

Storylines & stakes

  • Both teams are 1-1 in district after losing to West Orange-Stark. The district leaders, Shepherd and WO-S (both 2-0), play each other tonight, so the loser here drops to 1-2: two games behind tonight’s Shepherd/WO-S winner and one game behind the team that loses that game (district records per MaxPreps, checked Oct. 23). In a six-team district (SETXsports), that loss could also put a playoff spot in danger.
  • Silsbee has the top-scoring offense among core SETX schools (42.0 ppg); H-F has the best average scoring margin (+23.7).
  • Remaining: H-F — Shepherd (10/30), @Jasper (11/6). Silsbee — Hardin-Jefferson (10/30), @Shepherd (11/6). (MaxPreps)
  • Playoff format: UIL normally advances the top four teams in each district (general UIL format, REPORTED).
  • Silsbee offers a free audio broadcast, and SETXsports Audio has the game (pregame 7:15 PM).

Styles & coaching notes

Two of the area’s most explosive offenses; H-F’s defense has posted two shutouts.

T-Rohn says: Shootout potential means you don’t get up for nachos in the third quarter. Plan your snacks like a road trip to Mawmaw’s: go early and pack heavy.

The pick

TAKE: Hamshire-Fannett 33, Silsbee 29 — Silsbee has the top-scoring offense among core SETX schools at 42.0 ppg (SETXsports) and is at home, but H-F has the best scoring margin in the area. Against a common opponent, H-F beat Vidor 52-10 while Silsbee needed overtime to beat Vidor 42-39, and H-F’s defense has posted two shutouts (MaxPreps).

T-Rohn says: We’re riding with H-F’s defense in a shootout. Silsbee fans, your offense has its own receipts, so we’ll settle it Friday and argue about it Saturday.
