Lakeside Makes the Long Trip to Oberlin Count, Wins 41-7

A cast-iron pot steams on a blue burner on a football field at night, with its lid and a patterned cloth beside it, a football on a tee, and a tree-lined road behind.

FINAL · CONFIRMED

CONFIRMED: Final score of 41-7, per MaxPreps and the site owner’s decision (some outlets reported 41-0, see the note below); records, season scoring, schedules and Oberlin context come from the sources listed under Sources at the end. No quarter scores for Lakeside, scoring summary or individual stats were published by any outlet we checked. District math, where shown, is Gridiron Gumbo’s own. Sources are listed at the end.

Note on the score: Some outlets (the American Press, KPLC and the Minden Press-Herald) reported the final as Lakeside 41, Oberlin 0. The final used here is 41-7, per MaxPreps and the site owner’s decision.

The visitors from Sibley won their second straight. Oberlin, still searching for its first win, turns to district play next week.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Final (CONFIRMED): Lakeside 41, Oberlin 7 (Friday, Oct. 23, at Oberlin)
  • Records: Lakeside 5-3, 1-1 District 4-2A · Oberlin 0-8, 0-1 District 5-1A1
  • Next: Lakeside vs. Red River, Friday, Oct. 30 (district), then at Many Nov. 6 · Oberlin at Merryville, Thursday, Oct. 29 (district), then at Elton (Nov. 5 per MaxPreps)

The recap

Lakeside beat Oberlin 41-7 on Friday night in Oberlin, in a non-district game that sent a Webster Parish team to Allen Parish. The American Press, KPLC and the Minden Press-Herald listed the final as 41-02, 3, 4; MaxPreps lists 41-7.

TAKE (joke): Sibley to Oberlin is the kind of drive where the playlist runs out and somebody starts telling the same story twice.

The Warriors (5-3), from Sibley in Webster Parish, won their second straight game after a 20-14 district win over Winnfield last week.1 Oberlin (0-8) is still looking for its first win; its closest game this season was a 21-14 loss to Acadiana Christian on Oct. 15.

How it unfolded

MaxPreps’ box score lists all 41 Lakeside points in the first-quarter column and Oberlin’s 7 in the third,5 and we haven’t been able to check that against another source. No outlet we checked published a scoring summary, so we can’t describe how the scoring unfolded.

TAKE (joke): A final that reads 41-0 in three newspapers and 41-7 on an app is a Friday night where somebody is about to get a phone call from a scorekeeper.

MaxPreps’ game recap does say 41 is a season high for Lakeside. The Warriors’ previous best was 40 against Plain Dealing on Oct. 2, and the recap says four of Lakeside’s wins have come by 20 or more. Defense has driven the recent run: over its last six games, Lakeside has allowed 11.8 points per game on average by our count from MaxPreps’ schedule (MaxPreps’ recap, which was written from the 41-0 score, says 10.7), and five of the six were wins.

The district race

Oberlin (0-1 in 5-1A) has two district games left: at Merryville (0-2) on Oct. 29 and at Elton (Nov. 5 per MaxPreps). By Gridiron Gumbo’s math from the MaxPreps standings,6 Grand Lake (3-0, with its district schedule complete) has already clinched the 5-1A title: each of the four teams plays three district games, and no one else can finish better than 2-1 (Elton, at 1-1, has one game left; Oberlin could reach 2-1 only by winning out). (Our count, not an LHSAA announcement.) Lakeside (1-1 in 4-2A) hosts Red River on Oct. 30.

TAKE (joke): District 5-1A, District 4-2A and one very long road trip: a Louisiana football schedule takes a decoder ring and a plate of something fried.

What others missed

  • Two scoreless opponents. Lakeside held North Caddo (34-0) and Plain Dealing (40-0) scoreless.1 Oberlin’s 7 points mean it does not make a third. The Warriors have scored 200 points through eight games.1 They have allowed 109 counting the 41-7 final.
  • Both road wins are in Southwest Louisiana. Lakeside’s only two road wins this fall were at East Beauregard (28-8 on Sept. 25) and at Oberlin.1 Its two road losses were at Jonesboro-Hodge and Mansfield.
  • Oberlin has a new head coach and a plan. Robert Etheridge said in August that, whatever the record, the Tigers would “find ways to come out and make progress” this season.7 The program has won before: Louisiana Prep Football lists Oberlin at 9-0 in 2019 and 7-2 in 2023, and shows the Tigers beat Merryville 28-20 in the most recent meeting it lists (2024). Oberlin visits Merryville on Thursday.

TAKE: Oberlin’s next chance comes Thursday at Merryville, and Etheridge’s “make progress” goal is easiest to measure in district play, starting there.
